The prices are good, the portions are good, and the food tastes great. We love the Downtown Market and the pork tacos are one of our favorites. Save some time by getting their app and ordering ahead of arrival!

A bit on the pricey side for tacos in GR, but they are the most authentic I've seen thus far. Everything is fresh, and I like that they feature a board displaying where they source their ingredients. While I wish they served margaritas, it's all too easy to take your freshly squeezed limeade across the aisle to the Traverse Distillery store and buy a shot to spike your drink while you wait for your fresh Mexican fare.

Tacos are great here and so are the mexican salads. I love the pulled chicken and toppings they put on my salad. It was HUGE and after going to the salsa bar (on the side...don't miss it) the pineapple salsa and etc made my salad spectacular.

I was skeptical of Mexican food in Michigan when my wife suggested this place...but...this place is by far downtown Grand Rapids best kept secret. This place did not disappoint. Authentic Mexican flavor. Very similar to a taco truck experience in Los Angeles. The meat is tender and seasoned, the guacamole has a nice lemony taste and their selection of "Jaritos" sodas will impress you and the price is reasonable. I will be back Tacos El Cunado,Grand Rapids.

Delicious tacos, overall, with a decent variety. The service was teetering towards the below average level due to a lack of enthusiasm of the girls working. They weren't rude, just didn't seem to want to be there. Prices were reasonable, I just wish the combos weren't side OR drink. Obviously, I could buy a drink seperately, but where's the fun in that? Speaking of drinks, they had a large selection of sodas that all sounded delicious. I loved their board that boasted where the ingredients were from, and the feel of the place, paired with the Downtown Market, made for a unique dining experience. Getting down to the food, I had the taco trio - two asada, one al pastor - with double rice (instead of rice and beans) as my side. The tacos were filled well, tasty meat with cilantro and onion that I then topped with fantastic salsa and lime juice. As I said, they were filled will, and after two bites of the third taco, I simply ate the filling. The rice was a little dry, but the tacos made up for them. My girlfriend ordered a chicken quesadilla, which I then, of course, stole a bite of. It was delicious and wonderfully full of cheese. My only problem at all with the food was that a few bites of the tacos had relatively charred bits of meat in them, but it didn't detract from the overall quality.

The Tacos el Cunado in the Downtown Market is pretty good. Like many others have said, it's not exactly quick, so if you're looking for something fast, try another vendor in the market, or use their app or website to order ahead. Today I got the salad, and I asked if I could get steak instead of chicken or shrimp (which are the only two proteins listed on the menu for that item). The girl at the register said yes, so I was happy. The salad itself is a large portion. The menu board says it should include "seasonal Michigan vegetables" but all it had was greens, corn and black beans. A few more veggies would have been nice, but it was still good. The dressing is on the spicier side, so be aware of that if you don't like spicy food. The reason I give this 3 stars is because the same food (it might actually be better) is cheaper at the location on Grandville. Also it is usually a lot faster, and you don't have to pay for parking :)

My favorite tacos in town. Period. The line here is the longest of any restaurant at the Downtown Market, which is a good indication of the high quality of food. The ingredients are all from local suppliers (there is a sign explaining exactly where to the delight of all locavores) with the option to order with an ice cold Mexican Coke (which, in my humble opinion, is how tacos should always be consumed). There are a multitude of different combinations of proteins, toppings, salsas, and beverages to please just about anyone. Note that you may want to place your order to go, as the service is not especially fast and the market is (regrettably) changing their parking policies and only providing 30 free minutes of parking starting on 7/20/15.

Consistently good tacos every time I've been. Just inside the Downtown Market, Tacos el Cunado makes effective use of their small space. Simple register, hanging blackboard detailing menu options and a kitchen area just visible to the public eye. Typically I go for their tacos. Choose a meat, get it on corn shells with cilantro and onions, add sauce and you've got some fantastic lunch! They've got your classic glass bottle sodas to choose from to drink. Not my thing, but I'm sure it'd go well. Ingredients are fresh. Meats are flavorful and tender. Their condiment bar, when not utterly ransacked by previous guests, is full of delicious sauces, juicy lime wedges and spicy toppings. Seating space isn't the greatest. A small counter that wraps around the condiment area and a communal picnic table are your only options. I go for the small eating area in the corner of the Market across from Sweetie-licious. The view's so much better with the floor to ceiling windows than the cramped space you'll be forced to settle for if you stay. Really though, I'd stand to eat these tacos. They're great and two only cost me like $5 so it's plenty affordable, especially when you consider some of your other options at the Market.

Very good mexican food.....the only thing that was a little odd was that they did not make their own fresh chips....but everything else was fresh....and you could taste it. So that was the only disappointment (and you had to pay for them - first mexican restaurant that I experienced that). I had the tacos trio of which I had 3 different meats... all were great with the chicken, pork and chorizo.....pork being my favorite. Really the whole market is really great. Only other weird thing....most everything closes at 7.....but I think the new BBQ opening down there will have their own enterence and will have late hours.

I had a tempeh taco which was a good portion and tasted delicious and a nopales (cactus) taco that was solid also. I'll definitely make this a regular stop during my travels. My only negative was the $2+ dollar side of chips was really small for the price. I attempted to order more chips asking if I could pay for a larger portion of chips and thats when the wheels fell off... lol. I was not able to order a larger portion of chips and I was willing to order 2 more sides of chips at $2+. The salsa bar was great also. I love the DT market for food options, very diverse and all under one conveniently located roof.

  • M R.

This place is solid. If you want real tacos, this is your spot. Pros - solid food - coke in a bottle (somehow tastes better than in a can or cup) - bonus is the fun atmosphere of the downtown market Cons - service isn't super fast - they "don't have" tap water (you have to take a cup to a random sink attached to the wall of the downtown market, which is annoying, or buy their bottled water) I would definitely recommend this place if you love good Mexican food.

  • Scott H.

Have had the tacos a few time and never been disappointed. Personal favorite now is the chorizo quesdilla. Great selection of Jarritos too. Usually pretty quick even at busier times.

    (5)
  • Amanda L.

Ordered two vegetarian tacos with Guava Jarritos (Mexican soda pop) for only $6! My tacos were super tasty, spiced just right on corn tortilla. AND to top it all off (literally) they had pineapple salsa at the free salsa bar! Holla! I left with a full belly and my wallet was't empty. Patience is a virtue that I know I need to work on but it does seem like they are understaffed and/or the staff lacks a sense of urgency for how popular it is. Don't get me wrong, I'll wait for a well crafted taco, but the line moves a little slow with food coming out one plate at a time.

  • Sarah R.

This place is part of an awesome inside fresh market, i enjoyed walking around the market, checking out the spices, honeys, and jams offered, it really built up my appetite.. although there were many places that look good to eat, this one caught my eye. It also had one of the longer lines, but they moved quickly. I had a duo of al past tacos, they were fresh and tastey. They used products from Michigan and list where they get them from.

  • Gretchen D.

Good authentic style (cilantro and onion, not lettuce and cheese) tacos for $2.25 each. Inside the Downtown Market. Have not tried the other items (breakfast burritos, burritos, tamales) yet. We had the pork and chicken--slight preference to the pork. We especially liked they offered roasted jalapeno and onions on the side.

  • Adrianne B.

Tacos el Cunado is an affordable, simple taqueria tucked into the southeast corner of the Downtown Market. The taco al pastor was a standout item, flavorful and delicious. The pork tamale was good but not remarkable. And I went out if my way to order the fresh guacamole, urged on by their chalkboard sign stating the name if the employee who'd made it fresh today. Great guac, but the accompanying chips were not good. I have no idea if they are made in house or locally, but I would never order them again. If I was hankering for a couple tacos, I'd pop by again for those- solid lunch for the right price.

  • Jeremiah D.

Located in the back of the Downtown Market. Their tacos are great. This place compares to La Taquiera San Jose. Everything is always fresh and very tasty. The prices are very reasonable. Meat is extremely seasoned, tortillas are from Grand Rapids, salsas are made there, they have nearly a dozen flavors of Jarritos, and all of their utensils, plates, bowls, and napkins are biodegradable. Not to mention, they have donated thousands of gallons of water to countries without access to fresh drinking water.

  • Steve M.

Had the beef, pork, and chorizo tacos, all were good, but the chorizo was the best. Girlfriend had chicken tacos, and was very pleased, which is hard to do since she is a bit picky with meat. Rice and beans were fine, nothing special, guacamole was very good. I'd say the highlight was that they have a salsa bar that had some very good salsa options and the right heat level for someone expecting spicy Mexican food. They had a sweet salsa that was just labeled "seasonal", and seemed to be primary pineapple, that was the sleeper of the meal. They weren't quick, but I think we were the first customer of the day (hell yeah, tacos for breakfast), so I'm not sure it represents their normal service.

  • Kevin D.

I leave the warm weather of California and into the cold snow of Michigan. Having been recommend to try their tacos, I wanted to give them a taste and I was really impressed. The Asada, Chorizo, Pollo and Tempeh received my 'Mexican blood' stamp of approval. The salsas were fire too. Both in spice and taste. Tortillas were soft. So the combination of it all, leaves my stomach growling for more (I'm back in CA). I had to try the chips n guac too! Both Maria and Victoria's service made my experience even more rewarding. Shout out to the guys in the back cooking it all. Tastes just like home.

Arrived at noon, wasn't served until 12:50. Twenty minute walk both ways. No lunch counter burrito is worth 90 minutes of time. Food might be good but I was too aggravated to enjoy it.

Good food! Process of getting the food was very slow...I was there on a Sunday around one pm. Tamales were "so so" but pastor and carne Asada were great! System of ordering and making/serving food could be improved for better efficiency.

Great little taco stand. When I think of authentic tacos I think of a little moustached man standing behind a cart and slinging double corn tortilla'd meat, onion and cilantro tacos for 10 pesos. When I go to the market and eat at Tacos el Cunado it is really as close as you can get to that in Michigan. No shredded lettuce and cheddar = Happy Taco Experience I ordered the Tacos el Pastor and the Tacos Tempeh (a vegatarian soy-based option). The tacos really are great. The two corn tortillas were warm and soft, the el Pastor was very good and the salsa bar was a great addition as well. The Tempeh was okay, in terms of a vegetarian option, it was definitely tastier than some others I have tried but still very dry and in need of some moisture. Something about drinking a cold coca-cola from a glass bottle just felt right as a pairing as well. I can't tell you enough how much I enjoyed my little meal there. I believe firmly that they have some work to do in order to push their menu to the same level of consistency and quality across all foods (the burritos are good and the tamales could use a little work on the masa recipe, I haven't tried the nachos) but overall I like this little taco joint. I'm so very excited for what it can be in a year or so if they continue to hone their craft and continue to grow. Noone should spend a month without going to this little stand in the market! ...and no, they don't accept Pesos...

We spent the afternoon at the market and did some shopping/browsing and looking around. When it was time to eat lunch i was very excited to try the tacos as I've heard great reviews. Well Id have to say I am quite disappointed.. The young kids behind the counter were leaning around, drinking, EATING, and talking. The only person(s) is saw actually working was the chef behind the window and a young gal stocking the beverage fridge and removing full garbage bins. Every surface was dirty, the tables surrounding this venue were filthy and food was all over the floor. It surprised me how many employees were standing around while there was obviously things to do. "Got time to lean, you've got time to clean!" The food was good when it arrived but that's really my only positive on this review. I hope they realize what an amazing venue they have and clean up their act ASAP.

Really love the authentic Mexican food. Fresh salsa . Pickled jalapeños . Tacos three ways was a great light lunch . Bold flavors. Friendly staff. A wonderful fine in this market place . Lines are long but the food was worth the wait.

I'm hoping to amend this review the next time I'm in GR. The food tasted very authentic...once I finally got it. We were a larger than average sized group for a Monday afternoon. The 5 other people were almost done eating (as we're the numerous people that offered AFTER me), and then I finally got my vegetarian salad. It was good, really good, but how long does a pile of lettuce, a scoop of beans, and some corn take? It's not like I had to wait for the avocado to be sliced because they forgot it! Again, we were a big group, there right at lunch time, so I really hope they were just having a bad day. The food was delish and I'm a Mexican food snob. El Milagro tortillas are the best!

We went on a Friday during lent looking for fish tacos - they had fish but not in tacos - so we had the veggie burrito and were not disappointed - big portions - overall great service and great food

I've only had the tacos, so I can't speak for other items on the menu. You can not go wrong with the tacos... especially the pork tacos. The only draw back is the slow service.

  • Jordan H.

This is one of the best Mexican joints in grand rapids. Authentic and fresh ingredients, lots of choices, and friendly service. I love the chicken tacos and the tamales, and bonus points for the authentic mexian coke. Reminds me of the fare I can get at trucks in Los Angeles. Reasonably priced as well. Thanks!

  • Marie E.

Sad. I wanted to like this place...but how do you screw up nachos? Cold chips, cold shredded cheese, topped with cold gloppy congealed canned nacho cheese from Gordon Food Service, piled tall...so all the bottom chips are bare...and charge $7...that's how. Tamales were dried out, definitely need to order them "wet". The side of rice was undercooked & crunchy. Hope they can step up their game.

  • Amy B.

I really like this place. I will say you might have to wait a while, as this has gotten pretty popular. If you are looking for food when you're at the market or downtown, this place is great. I like the chicken tacos as the meat is shredded. I like the food about the same amount as I like the food at Taqueria San Jose. My husband likes the food here, too, but I think he likes the location and building and real authentic feel of Taqueria San Jose. But, in my opinion, both are affordable and both have great food. I really like the guacamole here, too! I haven't had the chips, so I can't comment on those. Tacos = excellent. My brother really liked the tamales. Again, it can be really busy and you might have to wait and I have been there when the pico and salsa is running low or empty. Give it a try!

    (5)
  • Rhonda D.

I like the selection of food here and that they actually have tamales! They also had a special of fish tacos one weekend which was awesome too see in Grand Rapids. The authentic Mexican Coca-Colas are GREAT! Real sugar and the taste is excellent...even though I'm a Diet Coke gal. They have Coke Lite for me. ;) I ended up getting the tamale platter which came with a soda, beans, rice, and one tamale. The beans were awesome. I would give them 5 stars if that's all I had. The rice was okay. The tamale though, which should have been the star on my plate, was cold. It was pretty disappointing to me because that meant it wasn't fresh. Usually fresh tamales come right out of a steamer (I used to buy them every weekend out in California) and they were sooo tasty. I will eat there again and give it another shot. Keep the food hot and fresh and this place could be excellent.

  • Shannon M.

Why is it that every single time I'm here, there is no salsa left? I've been numerous times at various times of the day and it's always down to the last drop. Someone pointed out that the salsa verde was gone last time I was there and the girl filled it....but neglected to put anything else out when people were scrapping to get the last of the pineapple salsa and pico. The tacos are hit or miss. Sometimes the shells are lovely and crisp and other times they are so soggy that they just fall apart. That paired with the high prices, it just isn't worth it.

    (2)
  • Karyn O.

Awesome food! Chicken tacos were amazing. Also, their salsa bar is great. The only thing is my brother got a burrito and there was barely any meat inside. The girl working the register wasn't too friendly, either. However, I will be back for the gauc and chicken tacos!

  • Cesar C.

Nice, simple taco shop. Nothing complicated but great basic choices. Another good bonus is that the tortillas they use to make the tacos are not greasy.

  • Rachael B.

After living in Los Angeles for many years and marrying a Man who's family is from Mexico, I have a high standard for street-style tacos (you know, corn tortilla, protein, onion, and cilantro). This place did NOT disappoint! The meat was well-seasoned and juicy, full or flavor. The grilled onions thrown in the side were great too. The guacamole was yummy as well. A great place to grab a meal!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
